Proven on real projects

Selected case studies will document the site challenge, specification, installation and outcome.

Why we publish them

A project is the claim, tested

Specified performance is a claim; a project is that claim tested by weather, traffic and time. These case studies are published because they are documented: each names the installer, shows the site before and after, and quotes the outcome in the words of the people who ordered the work — including the parts that were difficult. It is the same evidence-first rule the rest of this site follows, applied to our own installations.

The current set covers the three most common jobs X-Grid does. A school whose grass overflow parking had become a winter liability: Belper School’s car parks, rebuilt by Pugh-Lewis Limited of Chesterfield on a compacted MoT hardcore base, where tracked mud went from a daily complaint to, in their words, ‘dramatically reduced to practically zero’. A holiday village whose caravan access routes churned every wet season: at Park Avenue Holiday Village the rebuilt routes are grass-filled X-Grid that drains as designed and is mown with ride-on machines. And a domestic drive whose owners were topping up gravel ‘within as little as a week’ until forty square metres rebuilt on green X-Grid ended the cycle.

Each project page follows the same shape — the site challenge, the specification, the installation and the outcome — so you can find the project that resembles yours and read what was actually decided, layer by layer. Where a case study exposes a lesson, the lesson stays in: the installations that admit what was difficult are the ones worth copying.

Three sites, three lessons

Belper School car parks

Grass overflow parking rebuilt as an all-weather gravel surface on a compacted MoT base — mud reduced to practically zero.

Park Avenue Holiday Village

Churning caravan routes rebuilt in grass-filled X-Grid: stable, free-draining and mown with ride-on machines.

A domestic driveway

Forty square metres that stopped shedding gravel after years of weekly top-ups — green grid, decorative stone.

The work

Documented case studies

Fresh decorative gravel retained in X-Grid cells on a domestic driveway

Domestic gravel driveway transformation

A cottage driveway that lost most of its gravel within a week was rebuilt on 40 m² of green X-Grid with a decorative gravel finish. The gravel stays put and the surface drains as designed.

Equestrian paddock conversion, GB Groundworks

A muddy, boggy paddock was converted into a stable area: turf removed and levelled, geotextile and sand blinding installed, then black X-Grid interlocked and filled with soil and seed.

Rutted grass access road at Park Avenue Holiday Village before installation

Park Avenue Holiday Village

Rutting grass access roads that became impassable in winter were rebuilt with a geotextile-separated sub-base and grass-filled X-Grid. The matured routes no longer rut or muddy, and can be mowed over.

X-Grid gravel car parking installed at Belper School

Belper School car parks

Pugh-Lewis Limited of Chesterfield replaced overflowing grassed parking with a gravel-filled X-Grid car park on a compacted MoT hardcore base. Mud was "dramatically reduced to practically zero" and the areas stay usable all year round.

The next documented case study

If your site looks like one of these — a failing surface, a traffic problem, a drainage complaint — start with the matching application page, size the job in the configurator, and send the details to the technical team. Every build-up published on this site exists to make that specification straightforward, and every case study started exactly there. If a product comparison is what you are after, the compare page shows how the panel is specified against alternatives; the projects show how the whole system behaves once it is in the ground.
